Ways to Quiet Down that Engine

8964 Views 16 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  ilx_stylez
I love my ILX but I can't stand the loud engine. Anybody know how to quiet it down? I bought the car because I love to drive, not because I want to wake my neighbors when I start up. I've got the 2.4.

i actually never thought the stock ILX's would be loud.
maybe someone is wrong with your stock exhaust? post a video of your car on idle, might be a problem.
I want mine louder. Haha
The main reason I didn't buy the car last winter. The exhaust note just wouldn't go away. It was way too loud. I don't mind noise when I wailing on it but not at idle and at low speed on my front street. I would suggest looking into a silencer for your exhaust, that or a new muffler.
That is a carryover from the Si.

it's not the motor. Its the exhaust.

Its was tuned that way to be sportier.

i wanted a si in tuxedo, love the growl from the stock exhaust upon start up!

maybe you can swap the exhaust out with the base ilx, that might fit and work?

Good idea but wont work. Aside from the piping being different diameters all the way back but even the gaskets are different part numbers so there is no point in the system that is the same between the 2.4 and 2.0

I'd say check out trents progress thread since he did some noise cancellation stuff.

You can add sound insulation to the inside of the car to make it quieter.

As for the exhuast. It'll be hard to make it even quieter. I consider it already pretty quiet. You could try adding more resonators and changing the muffler to a super quiet one if they even sell those..

The only time I've felt the noise level was a nuisance was on the highway. Hitting 80mph or so, it becomes really difficult conversing with people in your car.
I wish the Hybrid exhaust was sporty sounding, I might even get 2 more horsepower and one less MPG.
:)
you might be able to find a sport muffler that still looks like the original that might give you a bit more noise.

the best one I have always known to do the job but not over powering is the apexi world sport exhaust.

I have an Apex'i WS2 on my accord and love it. No where near over powering.. sometimes I actually wish it was louder lol.
It'll be louder than stock though. he wants it to be quieter.

I think adding interior sound insulation is the way to go.

your ILX has 200 horses to push 3000 pounds, but more significant to the problem is the 170 lb-ft of twist. Its going to get whinny. The 2.0 is even WORSE.

Adding dynamat or some sort of insulation is the way to go, only problem is that it will be a bit tricky to take apart the panels since we dont know where exactly all the clips are located. It's going to take a lot of patience.

It'll be louder when you press down harder lol
