How does the regenerative braking work on ILX Hybrid? Does it work automatically or is it a manual pedal that has to pulled to activate?

The braking system works automatically. The system starts charging the Li-Ion battery anytime you let go of the gas or hit your brakes (as long as you have forward momentum, obviously nothing would happen if you are not moving).
