Hi All,

I just picked up my ILX. So far i love the car and its great!.

The only thing i dont like is the light setup. Im not that great with cars, so please excuse my non-mechanic language.

Attached is 3 pics, 1 of the whole car, 1 of the DRL(i believe thats what its called), and 1 of a bulb that i tried to replace.

So basically, all i want is to replace the DRL with a white light(similar to HID's). I dont want HID's because they are just the running light, and i basically want to replace the bulb alone. Can this bedone ?

I have tried all 3 of these bulbs from Canadian Tire and i get the same result of the light being yellow, but the 9005 type. Apparently the employees there dont know what i am talking about.

Those 3 bulbs wont necessarily get you the white light that your looking for. They'll look white at first but if you shine the light against a wall at night itll look yellow with hints of white. Right now the led bulbs available for aftermarket use arent to bright but it'll do the job. You'll have to get a 9005 led bulb but you wont have useful highbeams. I changed mine to hid's and they're bright as hell but there's so much wiring that goes with it that it kinda makes you not want to do it.

I would suggest before ASKING a question, researching for an answer. Not knowing proper termonology can yes put you in a pickle. Probably explains why that shop has sold three sets of bulbs and missed every time.

To get you on the right track so you know exactly what you're talking about...
First, HIDs dont make a light white. HID is High Intensity Discharge. Pretty much just means OMG BRIGHTZOR!! They come in different temperature that changes the color output. Quickly put, 3700 is just yellow. 4300 is getting whiter. 5000 white and some people can notice blue corners. 6000k starting to turn blue and further goes purple. The hotter it gets the whiter, then to blue and then purple.

You would be correct in not needing the HIDs.

As posted below, you can do LEDs but it will take away the use of your high beams. I high advise against that.
Look for Nokya Artic white halogens. I have no tried them myself yet but that would be my best bet (and what I was advised to get) for white DRLs to maintain high beam use.
LEDs will be far more crisp. But itd say replace your license plate lights and reverse lights with LEDs, DRLs with artic white halogens, and your fogs with the same halogens because I dont condone HIDs where HIDs dont belong unless done right with a projector... which will set you back a couple hundred bucks.

I am looking to do the same with my ILX (replace my DRL with white). With the Nokya Artic is it going to stick out like a sore thumb or does the white closely resemble the headlights?

My friend actually put in the nokya bulbs but they are the yellow bulbs. He was going for a different look. when the drl is on its a light yellow tint.

As I stated Ive not used them myself. However both lights arent ever on at the same time so would you even notice?

Yeah the yellow gives the jdm city light look. Supposed to be more amber but I think the yellow looks better.
I did my fogs yellow mimicking what lexus does with their fogs.

Hi,

I picked up the Nokya Artic white lights yesterday and installed it. For me i think it just looks like a "not so bright version of the one that came with car". I have attached some pics after the installation (the pics kind of sell off the wrong vibe because i just took them this morning, last night they were a very light yellow colour.

If you are looking to get rid of the yellow colour in general, do not buy the Nokya Artic White lights.

I spoke to the guy at the shop and he told me this before purchasing, however they werent priced to bad, 25$.

The guy at the shop said this is the most non-yellow you can as far as bulb replacement, and the next step will be LED's which requires some sort of resistor or relay(not sure). I asked about the issue where the High Beams wont work anymore after the installation of LED's and he said no they will work. Going to have a look today at them, he told me he will take back these and install the LED's for 65$. You guys think thats a good price ?

The high beams do work but they're nowhere near as bright as halogen high beams. Light will show but your low beams will be much brighter then your high beams

And you can go online and find cheaper led bulbs from ddm tuning or even google led drl and see what comes up. I got a pair of leds for about 25 and put them in myself. Just remember that your looking for 9005 hb3 bulbs

When you say as the ones that came on the car do you mean the DRL or the low beam? Because I agree they dont look as bright (stock drl vs arctic white) they do look MUCH more white in my opinion.

I do agree that this is probably the most white you can do without going HID or LED. However some LEDs are simply plug and play. Not all have resisters. HIDs will have a ballast to worry about.
The guy at the shop should not be giving you vehicle specific advise if he clearly doesnt own the vehicle or have prior knowledge. Look at any of the 3 links I posted and people will talk about the high beams not working with LEDs. Yes the bulb turns on when you activate the high beams, but your low beams, as stated, will be bright than the LED output making your high beams useless. Imagine getting into an accident and the insurance company puts blame on your because your high beams arent functional and should have been active?

No mechanic should suggest a mod that limits the functionality of a part all vehicles legally must have. I'm all for illegal mods that work great. But losing your high beams just for a bright white drl? Sounds ricer status to me.

Lastly, the "deal" the shop gave you would not be a deal at all unless the LEDs are worth at least $60 bucks.
Chances are the LEDs are like 40-50 and hes charging on top for labor. They cant take used bulbs back. Just cant. He'll use them for himself if anything. As stated, you can fine perfectly fine LEDs on google ebay and amazon for 25$... even cheaper but quality will suffer. Id suggest finding a friend to install them if youd wish not to. Buy a 6 pack and give your buddy 2 and call it a day. Should take like 10minutes to install and you can probably even find youtube do it yourself videos if you need.

Also to add if you have high beams that work, if where you live requires you to do a safety test that requires all the things that would deem a vehicle safe for the road, like working high beams, then it could also cause a problem when it comes time for that.

Does anyone know if I purchase the 9005 HB3 LED lights for my DRL, do I need the decoder kit? I was looking at the on from iJDMTOY

Actually I bought those ones and yes you do need the decoder kit. But its easy to install but they arent bright though

Ended up buying the ones from IJDMTOY along with their license plate led and interior led package should get it within a couple days i'll try and take some pics when im done

Hey All,

So i went back by the shop, and got LED's for the DRL's and the Fogs, they look awesome! The Highbeams were not affected that much, i did loose some brightness but they are still defineatly brighter than my DRL. It was just a bulb replacement no resistor required for the fogs and the DRL's. I attached some pics there. I did it my self, and end up payin only 80$(apparently the life span on these are much longer) for the the fogs and the DRL's. I figured its worth it because when they go i can just order the same bulbs online and fix it my self.

Well which LEDs did you go with?

And i dont think you understand the high beam thing.
Our oe bulbs are 80/120watt. They activate at 80watts for drls then 120watt when you turn the high beams on. Leds dont function like that. They have ONE setting. It is impossible for the led to be brighter when you hit the high beam unless the ilx is pushing in more power which they werent designed to take.

Go drive down the road at night and turn your high beams on. They will be no brighter than your low beams which means they fail as functioning high beams. Which in my opinion is a great example of a ricer.

And p.s. your led fogs dont match your hid low beams. Looked better with the halogen drls and the same halogens in the fogs. Would have matched and it was clearly whiter than oe. Laughably so.

Thanks Dnyce thats the look I want, hope fully it turns out that way. I also bought the LED bulbs for the license plate lights and I just thought of a possible problem. Are the LED's going to effect my view out of my back camera? Anyone have any thoughts?
