The problem

According to the NHTSA bulletin and Honda:”If the manual or power door lock is activated while an interior front door handle is operated by an occupant, the cable connecting the interior door handle to the door latch mechanism may become loose and move out of position. There is a possibility that the cable can move far enough out of position to prevent the door from properly latching.”

The potential consequence of a not fully-latched door is that it could open while driving or during a crash. This increases personal injury risk to occupants of the vehicle.

Honda discovered the problem in late December 2011. Following a thorough investigation, Honda implemented two successive design changes to remedy the problem and decided to conduct a safety recall on July 12, 2012.

To-date, Honda said it has received eight claims of an unlatched front door on 2012 Honda CR-Vs and no claims on 2013 Acura ILX sedans. No reports of any injuries or deaths related to the front door latch problem have been received.

What Honda will do

Honda will notify owners and dealers will replace the front door latch assemblies of all affected Honda CR-V and Acura ILX vehicles, free of charge. In addition, according to Honda documentation, the front door handles of all affected 2012 Honda CR-Vs produced prior to the implementation of the first design change will be replaced, also at no charge to owners.

The Honda safety recall is expected to begin on or about August 16, 2012. In the meantime, owners of affected 2012 Honda CR-Vs and 2013 Acura ILX sedans with any questions or concerns may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009. Honda’s safety recall campaign numbers are S45, S46 and S47.

Alternatively, owners of vehicles involved in the campaign may contact the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Reference the NHTSA campaign ID No. 12V338000.
